The Art of Minimal Intervention Winemaking

Minimal intervention is a fancy way of saying “let the vineyard speak.” Here at Castello Barone, Scott and Elizabeth believe the best wines are the ones that taste like the land that raised them. Not a lab. Not a formula. Just the honest expression of the vineyard.

What does minimal intervention mean

It means we avoid unnecessary additives and manipulations. We let fermentation unfold naturally. We let the grapes show off. We guide gently instead of controlling aggressively.

Minimal intervention practices include:

·        Hand harvesting

·        Native or carefully selected yeasts

·        Gentle pressing

·        Lower sulfite usage

·        No over extraction

·        No artificial coloring

·        No flavor manipulation

The result is clean, elegant, layered wine with a true sense of place.

Why this style works beautifully in Swan Creek

The Swan Creek AVA has naturally expressive fruit thanks to its elevation, climate, and soil. Minimal intervention preserves that character. If you love wines that feel connected to the land, you’ll fall in love with this approach.

A faith-led philosophy

For Scott and Elizabeth, winemaking is stewardship. They believe God’s creation doesn’t need to be corrected, only nurtured. Their military background taught them discipline. Their faith taught them gratitude. Their heritage taught them how wine brings people together.

Minimal intervention ties it all together.

Baccus approved

Our Vineyard Dog thinks all wine is great, but he especially loves the ones that make guests smile. If you hear excited barking, that’s his official five-star rating.
