How Weather and Climate Shape NC Wine Styles

Wine is a living expression of the sky above and the soil below. In North Carolina, especially in the Swan Creek AVA, weather plays a major role in shaping the flavor and structure of every bottle. If you’ve ever tasted two vintages that felt completely different, weather’s usually the reason.

At Castello Barone, Scott and Elizabeth work with, not against, the climate. They see weather as part of God’s artistry, and their job is to steward the vineyard through each season with care.

Spring: The season of hope

Longer days and warmer temperatures wake the vines. Buds break open like little prayers for the year ahead. Spring weather influences how quickly the vines grow and how healthy the clusters become.

Summer: Sunlight and strength

Warm days help the grapes ripen and develop flavor. Cool foothill nights preserve acidity, which is a signature trait of our European-influenced style. Balanced acidity is the backbone of every memorable wine.

Fall: Harvest with gratitude

The final stretch of weather determines the depth, aromatics, and structure of the fruit. A warm, sunny fall produces beautifully ripe grapes. A cooler fall creates elegant, lighter wines. Every harvest at Castello Barone is done by hand with gratitude for whatever the season brings.

Winter: Rest and renewal

Just like us, the vines need a season to rest. Winter lets them store energy and prepare for the cycle to begin again. The vineyard sleeps, and Scott and Elizabeth pray over the land, planning for the new year.

What this means for your glass

NC wine is dynamic and expressive. No two years are exactly the same. That’s the beauty of small-batch winemaking. You can taste the season, the weather, the prayer, and the stewardship in every sip.

And if you wander the vineyard during your visit, don’t be surprised if Bacchus our Vineyard Dog escorts you. He loves supervising weather conversations.
